Today in Disney History!

October 1, 1971 & 1982

Today we double up on special occasions seeing that the two are so similar. In 1971, the Walt Disney World Resort opened the Magic Kingdom in Bay Lake, Florida and EPCOT eleven years later.

In the 60's, Walt Disney made plans to make a new version of Disney Land in Florida including what was known as the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT) to serve as a base for new innovations in city living. Though Walt passed away in 1966, the "Florida Project" moved on and was renamed from Disney World to Walt Disney World by Walt's brother Roy as a way of honoring the legend.

The Walt Disney World Resort is the most visited vacation resort in the world, opening it's gates to 52.5 million guests annually. The 27,258 acre resort is home to four theme parks, two water parks, 27 themed resort hotels, four golf courses, one camping resort, one residential area, and additional recreational and entertainment venues including Downtown Disney.

Today in Disney History!

September 22, 1999

15 years ago today, the ever popular Illuminations 2000: Reflection of Earth premiered with it's soft opening at EPCOT.

Officially debuting October 1, Illuminations is a spectacular firework extravaganza that involves pyrotechnics, laser lights, and fountains creating a visual production on the park's World Showcase Lagoon. The show was part of the Walt Disney World Millennium Celebration, but would become so popular that eventually the "2000" was dropped from the title and would be known as Illuminations: Reflections of Earth.

The show still runs today and is always a highlight of the day.

Another Themepark Catastrophe!

Just a few weeks ago, we learned about the eminent retirement of Maelstrom at EPCOT to make way for a Frozen attraction. Now, we hop over to Disney's Hollywood Studios where we are losing yet another classic attraction.

The Studio Backlot Tour

Rumors have been circulating for a while that the attraction would close to make way for a copy of Cars Land at Disneyland's California Adventure in Anaheim to make it's way here in Florida. Though the company doesn't want to reveal their plans for the area, they did say the decision was made in the name of "future enhancements." Oaken's Frozen Funland from the Frozen celebration will take up a portion of  the Backlot Tour on The Streets of America.

The Backlot Tour has been part of the park since it's opening in 1989, and was meant to take guests behind the scenes of the then working studio but has changed over the years including the removal of the residential section in 2005 to make way for the Lights Motors Action show.

Backlot's final tour will be on September 27, 2014.

Soon Catastrophe Canyon will forever be destroyed.

Disney Legend: Alan Menken

If you hum Friend Like Me while walking down the street, waltz to Beauty and the Beast on your date, or belt out Part of Your World in the shower, then you need to stop what you're doing right now and honor a true Disney Legend.

For those of you who don't know this face, it's Alan Menken, an American composer for both film and musical theater and pianist. Menken joined forces with the Walt Disney Company in the 1980's and has been working with them since bringing fantastic music to the hearts of millions.

Within his time with the company he has composed the entire soundtrack for movies like:
  • The Little Mermaid (1989)
  • Beauty and the Beast (1991)
  • Aladdin (1992)
  • Newsies (1992)
  • Pocahontas (1995)
  • The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
  • Hercules (1997)
  • Home on the Range (2004)
  • Enchanted (2007)
  • Tangled (2010)
Keeping in mind those are just films, he also went on to compose the music for the Broadway versions of Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, and most recently Aladdin as well as Hunchback that's just starting rehearsals this week.

Aside from entire soundtracks, Menken has also written music for the ABC series, The Neighbors, and even the big musical number in the middle of the first Captain America film.

Menken has brought in 8 Academy Awards for his work on Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Pocahontas making him the living person with the most number of Academy Awards (Take that Leonardo DiCaprio). In 2001, he was named an official Disney Legend, the highest honor the company has to give it's collaborators.

Alan shows no sign of slowing down even at his age of 65, and I'm glad he's not. This man has written the soundtrack of my life and he has nothing but respect from me.

Thank you, to the man making musical tales as old as time.

Do You Have Frostbite Yet?

"Do you wanna build a snowman?"

If the answer is no and you were able to read past that line without leaving the page, welcome to the club.

Now even though I do run this Disney blog and bother my friends and family with the tune of In Summer from the film since it came out, I must admit that I am tired of this whole "FROZEN FEVER" as it's been called.

But why bring this up now when it's going to be a year after the release of the film? Well that's because up until this point the popularity of the film didn't bother me, just like the cold (Haha oh so funny). But now I think the Disney Company has gone too far in trying to profit from this mega-hit.

On Friday September 12, Disney officially announced on their parks blog that they will be bringing Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, and Olaf to the Norway pavilion in EPCOT at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando. Now this wouldn't have shocked me seeing that the two sisters first met at EPCOT before going anywhere else in the world, but the way these now beloved characters are reappearing in EPCOT is already causing a stir around the globe. Frozen's upcoming ride will replace the classic Maelstrom attraction that has been housed in the pavilion since 1988.

Now I like the film, and I know that the company wants to make every penny they can from it's ever growing popularity, but I think this has gone too far.

Since the popularity of the film, the company has re-released it as a sing-a-long in theaters, had a TV special centered on the making of the film, had a full take over of another park in Walt Disney World (Hollywood Studios) that was supposed to last during the summer but has now been extended to the end of the holiday season, and have even released countless merchandise ranging from $100 child costumes to lunchboxes and toothbrushes.

I have no opposition to the milking of this film, but unlike anything else they have done so far, this new project involves the destruction of a classic ride that is a fan favorite. When I broke the news to my family, they were all heartbroken that this ride that we all remember and look forward to riding every trip, is now going to be just that, a memory.

Another thing that terrifies me about the project is the time being invested into it. Maelstrom's final day of operation will be October 5th, 2014 and the Frozen ride will be open early 2016. That's a little over a year for a complete overhaul! That doesn't seem right.

With that amount of time, I fear for just a remodeling of the old attraction. Though I don't agree with the overhaul, if you are going to make a Frozen ride, do it right. Maybe if the ride is so spectacular and jaw dropping that it's even more likeable than the original, I would be ok with it. I just don't want to walk in and see the three headed troll replaced by Grandpapa Troll in the same position.

I will try to venture through the mythology of Norway one more time before it's eminent retirement in a few weeks, and I advise that you do the same.

You are not the first to pass this way, but you'll soon be the last.

Welcome to the Blog!

Hello, hello, hello!

Who doesn't know Disney? Like anyone else that is human (or dogs for some reason), I grew up with the spectacle, the wonder, and magic of the Walt Disney Company. I have never encountered a person who didn't know the company and their long running reputation of bringing joy to people all over the world. Now me, I'm a huge fan! I am the type of person who could be sitting there and all of a sudden I burst into a full fledge musical number ranging from the work of the Sherman Brothers in Mary Poppins to the works of Alan Menken during Disney's renaissance in the 90's.

That being said, I welcome you to the blog. Here, I will talk about any and every Disney news I can get my hands on. Weather it be from the parks, a video-game, or (of course) the next big blockbuster coming out I will post about it.

Once again, I welcome you.
